Finding the Right Domain Name::
A domain name is a unique identifier for a web site, such as yahoo.com or amazon.com. It's the name your site will be known by and referred to by others. We suggest choosing:
- A short name that's easy to remember, spell and pronounce
- A name descriptive of your organization
- A name that includes a major keyword (Search engines may rank a site slightly higher if the keyword is in the domain.)
A .com name is still the preferred business extension. However, it can be difficult to find a good .com name that makes sense for your site. One alternative is to search for expired or expiring domains, which sometimes are quite good. Use our "
Domains Registration" section to search for these domain names.
Another alternative is to try other extensions. Here are some guidelines about extensions:
- .com is used for both commercial and personal sites
- .net is recommended for sites involved in technology or the Internet
- .org is recommended for nonprofits
- .info is used for both commercial and personal sites
- .biz is restricted to commercial sites
- Country-specific extensions, such as .ca for Canada, are used for Canadian or Canadian-related sites
Check our "
Domain registration" section, and we can help you sort through the scores of possible name and extension combinations that are available.
Once you've picked a few possible names, you'll need to see if they're available. WhoIs Source runs the
Registry Whois, where you can find out whether a domain name is registered. You also can search Whois from the sites of most hosting services, many of whom will also register your name for free if you sign up for an account with them.
